The Department of Chemical Engineering offers an undergraduate Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering for students who want to develop their interests in mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology combined with fundamental engineering analysis and design principles.
The degree affords a wide range of career choices ranging from working as a professional engineer in technologically important areas like microelectronics, polymer/materials science, biotechnology and alternative energy source research and development, to using the degree as pre-professional training for fields like law, medicine or business. In addition, many students use their undergraduate education to prepare themselves for attending graduate school in an engineering discipline.
Our educational mission is to provide students with the initial foundation knowledge and skills they will need to become, and remain, leaders in their professional careers. Specific program objective are:
- To educate students in the core chemical engineering and basic science subjects that constitute the modern intellectual basis for the chemical engineering profession.
- To educate students in methods of engineering analysis and design in an environment where problem-solving, teamwork and communication skill s are emphasized.
- To provide students with knowledge and counseling that prepares them for admission to graduate programs in science and engineering, as well as professional employment in industry.
- To provide students with breadth in their education and a context in which to appreciate the potential life-long societal contributions in their practice of the chemical engineering profession
We prepare students to make successful contributions in careers in a wide variety of professional arenas including industry, academia, government and the medical and legal professions. We will take advantage of the unique resources offered by the University of Rochester to promote the department's mission, including the development of good working relationships with faculty from across the university to facilitate the advising, training and general enrichment of our students' educational experience while at the university.
