How to Apply for Graduate Study Prospective graduate students should apply through the University of Rochester College graduate application website . There is no fee for applications submitted via this website. A complete University of Rochester College graduate application to the Chemical Engineering department contains several components: a full Online application, a Curriculum Vitae, a Personal and Research Statement, three letters of recommendation, official transcript(s) and official test scores. In order to make the best possible decisions on admissions and financial aid, your application must be complete by January 15 for September (Fall semester) admission. After the committee has received your completed application file they will review it and make final decisions regarding offers. Please keep in mind that these supporting materials are a requirement. If your file is not complete, the Graduate Admissions Committee cannot make a decision on your application. Please note that virtually all financial aid is awarded to students beginning their graduate program in September and that virtually all admissions to the Ph.D. program are made for students starting in September. Applicants are encouraged to apply for outside funding such as NSF or New York State fellowships. Most PhD students receive full financial support, including a stipend for living expenses and a tuition waiver.
Standardized Tests Applicants are urged to take required tests early so that the results can be considered in conjunction with the candidate's academic records. Obtain information and registration materials from your own institution or write to: Educational Testing Service, Princeton , NJ 08541 . The institute code number for GRE and TOEFL reports for the College, Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is 2928 . The GRE department code for Chemical Engineering is 1001 and the TOEFL department code for Chemical Engineering is 64 . Graduate Record Examination (GRE) : All applicants should take the general (aptitude) test and should report the verbal, quantitative, and analytical scores and percentiles. Average scores for entering students are 80th percentile in all categories. Subject specific tests are not required. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) : This test is required of all applicants whose native language is not English unless they are graduates of a U.S. undergraduate program (minimum of 2 years of study in the U.S. ). A minimum TOEFL score of 620 (paper-based test), 260 (computer-based test), or 105 (internet test) is required for admittance.
Documents or letters submitted in support of your application must be in English or should be accompanied by an English translation. Please do not send secondary school records. In many countries visas will not be issued without proof of adequate proficiency in English, such as a satisfactory TOEFL and/or GRE verbal score (see Standardized Tests above). To obtain a visa for study in the United States , international students must present the Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019) at a U.S. consulate or embassy and demonstrate full proof of ability to pay all tuition and living expenses for the first year of study. Note: University fellowships may not cover all of these expenses; students will ordinarily need some additional funds. International Services Office will issue the I-20 or DS-2019 after a student has accepted the offer and demonstrated proof of his/her ability to pay all expenses for at least the first year of study. Transcripts Send your official transcript(s) from the Registrar at each college or university you have attended (including the University of Rochester , if applicable) directly to the Department of Chemical Engineering (see Mailing Instructions below). Letters of Recommendation Complete the upper portions of the Reference Reports before giving them to the three persons you are asking to recommend you. If the recommender requires additional space, they must use their official university or business letterhead. Full contact information for the references (telephone number and E-mail address) is required as they may be contacted to discuss your application. Supply the references with stamped envelopes addressed to the Department of Chemical Engineering (see Mailing Instructions below). The reference reports can be found within the online graduate application.
