Technology plays an important role in the Rochester economy.
Also known as "The World's Image Centre", Rochester is the home to several leading high-tech companies including Eastman Kodak Company, Xerox Corporation, Bausch & Lomb, and General Motor's Fuel Cell Research Center. The University's own Medical Center provides state-of-the-art biotechnology and biomedical ventures. In addition to these larger enterprises, many small, high-technology companies offer graduate students and spouses many options for research in business and industry and provide Rochester with one of the lowest unemployment rates in New York.
The Chemical Engineering Department is well connected to the local economy. Graduate research projects may involve collaboration with local industry, and undergraduate students often find summer internships and post-graduate employment oppotunities with local companies.
